Immersed in fog’s profound stillness and my perceived solitude, I start at short, breathy exhalations from a dolphin pair. Unexpected intimates, we share other-worldly silence for a few moments. Pier moving under my feet, the fog teases, and I thrill to the inability of senses and intellect to inform the moment or place of our next shared breath. Near port, far starboard. Regular, rhythmical sound, and my straining gaze pivots; a flash of dorsal fin, ripples closing in, and they leave me yearning yet again.
